Crowd booed the decision for ten minutes. "I gave (Waterman) two rounds against Gavilan's seven, with one round even.
Consquently when Referee Green raised Waterman's hand without any hesitation at all at the close, I wondered if I was seeing things." (Johnny Sharpe in The Ring, May 1956, page 52)

"The contest was a most interesting and satisfying one. Gavilan's performance was such as to make Ray admit that he feared to take chances. In the fourth round Sugar Ray suffered a cut over the right eye that bled throughout the bout..For the first six rounds it was anybody's fight..But after the sixth, there was not doubt about Ray (having the better of it)." The crowd booed the decision. The New York Times and the Daily News both scored the fight for Gavilan (2-1 to 8-5 underdog). AP scored the rounds even, with the edge to Williams on the strength of the knockdown.

"It was a fine bout..Wright's superior boxing won the first, second, and third rounds. Then Gavilan began to warm up and won the middle rounds by his harder punching and..aggressivness. Wright again took the lead in the eighth and ninth. After the tenth had barely started Gavilan landed a smashing overhand right which caught Wright on the chin and dumped him for a five count. After Wright arose, (the referee) stopped the mill." (The Ring, February 1948, page 54)
