"Quintero's puzzling southpaw style won him an even break in his engagement with the titleholder last night. Promoter G. R. K. Carter said the inaugural of the winter fistic season in the Miami arena attracted 11,000 persons who paid $32,000 to witness the match. Mandell's contract called for $10,000, he added, while Quintero worked on a 12½ per cent basis with a small guarantee." (AP)

Attendance: 22,812. From the Chicago Tribune (Bob Soderman). McLarnin fought from a crouch "to offset Mandell's stabbing lefts, and then kept Sammy in retreat as he moved in close to hammer away at the body." Walter Eckersall of the Tribune scored it five rounds for McLarnin, two for Mandell, and three even. It was an excellent, action-packed fight.

Mandell's title was not at stake because his manager had a stipulation inserted in the agreement that Goodrich had to weigh in over the lightweight limit of 135 pounds. Mandell broke his left collar bone during the first five seconds of the bout, forcing him to cancel upcoming bouts he had scheduled - including one Oct. 8 with Lope Tenerio in Cleveland.

"Sammy Mandell, world's lightweight champion, won a shade newspaper decision in 10 rounds over Billy Petrolle, Duluth, here tonight, but barely escaped a knockout. A terrific right to the jaw early in the eighth round knocked Mandell into the ropes and a smashing left to the head had him groggy. Sensing a knockout, Petrolle pumped both hands to the head and body, but Mandell's footwork saved him." (Helena Independent)

Mandell received the referee's decision. (Nevada State Journal) Also, see The Ring. October 1925, page 32. Jefferson Barracks was not in St. Louis, as shown here previously, but in Lemay, a town located a few miles south of St. Louis. Evidently official decisions were given at the Barracks, a military reservation.

Mandell won the newspaper decision. (Nevada State Journal) and the Detroit News (Jack Kincaid). According to sportswriter Sam Greene, Barbarian was "baffled by the sheer speed of Mandell. Whether Barbarian was going in or backing up, he usually was having his face decorated with a left glove, sometimes with two gloves." However, Barbarian landed the hardest blows of the fight and rallied in the last round.

Mandell and Moore " fought eight fast rounds here tonight to what one sports writer declared a draw, while another held the contest ended with Moore having a slight (shade)." (Nevada State Journal) This was a cautious, slow bout and Pal Moore was the aggressor in what little fighting was done. The Memphis Commercial-Appeal gave Pal Moore a slight shade while Referee Billy Haack stated afterwards that he would have declared the bout a draw. The fight was changed to a ND contest on the day of the bout after Mandell weighed in above the contracted 120lb limit for the fight due To Pal Moore's refusal to engage in a decision bout with the weight disadvantage.
