A "close decision". (New York Times) According to The Ring, August 1940, page 59, Knox got a hotly disputed decision (not a win for Cooper, as shown here previously). This agrees with Knox's record in The All-Time Ring Record Book; in which Cooper's record is not included.

A "stunning surprise to the 10,468 spectators." (Associated Press) Knox couldn't take Burman's body punches. Body blows followed by a powerful left hook to the chin put Buddy down for the count in round five.

In the first round a short right to the mid-section knocked the breath out of Knox and put him down for a 9-count. He barely got up in the nick of the time and was able to get his breath back. In round two he made short work of Madden with a right to the chin which put him down for the full count. (Bob Soderman, Chicago Tribune.
