"In the exchange Gans got both hands to head and Erne seemed a trifle dazed. Gans felt him out with a left shove to the face, drawing blood to nose. Erne seemed dazed and Gans rushed and exchanged, putting right plump on Erne's jaw. Erne fell slowly to the floor with his mouth and nose bleeding, rolled over on his stomach and was counted out before he could attempt to regain his feet." (wire report)

Erne down in round 1 from a right to the mouth. Though pressing the fight, Ferns was bleeding badly over the last few rounds. "A right to the jaw that seemed to daze Erne, followed by a hard left swing full on the unprotected jaw, put the Buffalo boy down and out. The bout proved a great drawing card, the clubhouse being packed to the rafters, and many of those who crossed the river were unable to gain admittance. It is estimated that 4,500 persons saw the fight." - Toronto Star
