TKO5/6
Olympia A.C., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
Lewis had been badly injured in a traffic accident in the previous spring. He was attempting to resume his boxing career, but had nothing left but courage. After this fight, he lingered near death for several days, suffering paralysis of the left side, after which he slowly recovered. He never boxed again.

Very poor fight according to both the NY Times and Boston Globe--the Globe had Lewis winning. From the Times article it is clear that they felt neither fighter was entitled to the decision. The NY Tribune had Mansfield winning for the first four rounds and then described the bout as a stall to the end after that.

Ward died the following day due to a brain concussion caused by striking his head on the ring floor. The post-mortem examination revealed a blood clot at the base of the brain. "Both men fought fiercely, even up to the seventh round, when Lewis took the lead, sending some hard punches into Ward's body. In the ninth Lewis knocked Ward down for the count of nine. Ward arose; Lewis at once landed a straight left to his jaw and floored him, his head striking the floor violently. He revived in a few minutes and talked rationally, then relapsed into a comatose condition, from which he did not recover." - Globe & Mail. After being charged with manslaughter in the aftermath of the fight, Lewis was eventually fined $1,000 for engaging in a prize fight. His father/manager Jacob Besterman was also fined $1,000 for "aiding and abetting" a prize fight, while trainer Frank O'Brien was fined $200.

Police Gazette had Gans winning, though they wrote that this was the best fight of Lewis's career. Trenton Times reported all rounds for Gans, except for 4th, which was even. Associated Press reported that neither men had an advantage. NY Evening World reported that Gans gave Lewis a terrific beating, and only in one rounds was Lewis able to fight back some. The Philadelphia Item (most authentic of the sources because it had a reporter on the scene) called the fight a draw.
