With 4 rounds each, the verdict was given to Cochrane "due to penalties called on Roth." (New York Times) Actually, a scandalous situation developed. Referee Frank Scully's decision caused a riotous response because nearly everyone thought that Roth won easily. Someone jumped in the ring and slugged Scully on the jaw, knocking him cold. After he recovered he apparently discovered that he had made a scoring error and reversed his decision. Later, after he reached his dressing room, he announced that the original decision stood and the announced change was to "save my life from the mob." Next morning State Athletic Commissioner George E. Keenan suspended Scully and temporarily shut down the Dreamland Sporting Club, which put on promotions at Laurel Garden, because of a lack of special police protection.
