After the fighters had been "fiddling around for four rounds," the referee stopped the fight. "The spectators hissed and hooted the principals for indulging in what had every appearance of being a well arranged fake. Gardner told the crowd that he had done his best, but could not overcome the handicap of Armstrong's greater weight." (Fort Wayne News) This fight was also reported as "no contest" by the Philadelphia Item.

Martin defends world 'colored' heavyweight title
"Martin proved the cleverer and never gave his opponent a chance, being declared an easy winner on points at the close of the fifteenth round; Martin, it is announced, will challenge the winner of the Jeffries-Fitzsimmons fight in San Francsico." (Associated Press)

In the third Jeffords got a left jab on the body and a light tap to the face, dropped to the floor and writhed there in simulated agony. His claim of "foul" was not agreed with by Referee Johnny Eckhardt. It was a clear case of quit by Jeffords and he will find it hard work to get another bout in this vicinity. Brooklyn Daily Eagle
