"Davis, usually a willing mixer, did not do any punching of his own until Commissioner Billy Prince strode down to the ringside and spurred him into action. During the fifth and sixth rounds Davis threw enough punches two win the rounds..It appeared that Davis could hit Compo at will. Compo altered his attack to the body in the seventh round which slowed Davis to a walk and dropped him at the bell. A two-fisted barrage to Davis' jaw at the start of the eigbth round dropped Davis for the count. Davis had his purse held up..(The Ring, August 1949, page 59.)
