"Sands was leading when he received a cut over his left eye in the 6th round. Pompey tore after the favorite in the seventh and pinned Sands to the ropes with a vicious barrage. Blood streamed from Sands' eye, and after Pompey hammered the Australian for about 30 seconds, Referee C. Davidson halted the fight." Associated Press

This was the first fight televised coast-to-coast in the United States. Sands mauled and cuffed Olson for nine rounds, and then Olson made a terrific rally in the last round, landing repeatedly with rights to the head that staggered Dave. But Sands was much too far in front for this rally to change the outcome. Sands was the better boxer and more precise hitter. It was a rather slow fight. The gross gate was only $5,832.

Olson was knocked down in the 1st round for the mandatory 8-count, although up at "2." It was a slow fight, as both men counterpunched. Olson landed a left hook and right cross in round 8 that buckled Sands's knees. The decision met with a mixed reception from the audience.

Yarosz was a much cleverer boxer and won clearly on points, but could not hurt Sands. The Australian was wild with his punches and made the mistake of trying to outbox Yarosz. (Based on story in Boxing News, April 6, 1949, page 15.)
