New York Times scored it a draw, detailed report in the Albany NY Evening Journal gives the victory to Lewis, stating that Lewis's defense was splendid and that Dixie Kid missed widely throughout the bout. It was a good slugging bout and Dixie Kid had a huge tenth round which may have swayed some reporters. NY Herald also scored the bout for Lewis.

Dixie Kid was knocked down in the 7th round.
"It was a hard-fought battle, with the Dixie Kid having a shade the better of it, but Temple stood up and fought back so manfully that, although the Dixie Kid was better than he, there were but few who begrudged him a draw." (Baltimore American)
According to Baltimore Sun, Dixie Kid had the better of seven rounds, three rounds for Temple, and the other five being even. Temple was about 15 pounds the heavier, according to both American and Sun.
"In the eighth round the Kid knocked out of joint a knuckle of his right hand." (Baltimore Sun)

"It had been announced that the Dixie Kid was to be married a few hours after the set-to. Mr. Maurice J. Herford, secretary of the Eureka Club, later stated that the contemplated marriage ceremony could not be performed, as license clerks of the court were keeping holiday and could not be located." Walcott was 2 1/4 pounds overweight, while Dixie Kid was below 140 pounds. Winning easily Walcott was disqualified for a kidney punch, although Walcott had been landing them throughout with no warning of foul. The contest was disregarded as a title bout and Walcott continued as champion when it was later discovered the referee had bet on the Dixie Kid.
