Corbett outpointed the champion in the early rounds with his "slashing, choppy" southpaw style. By the tenth Corbett was in a bad way, as he had grown weaker while Fields grew stronger, although Fields opened up too late to gain the decision. At the end of the bout Fields raised his own arm, but Referee Jim Griffin boosted Corbett's glove into the air, which "amazed" Fields. The verdict was popular with the crowd. (UP)

referee: Gene Jewett
"Kid Kopecks was ruled out...for not trying. When the sixth round was half over, Jewett waved Kopecks to his corner in disgust and lifted Corbett's hand." Neither fighter did much fighting. Fresno Bee

"In the fifth round Corbett was almost out, and in the sixth he was hanging on, while Shore was hammering him all over the ring...
There was a storm of boos and cat-calls over the decision and the crowd left the hall complaining about Jewett's work. It was one of the rankest hometown decisions that has been made." Fresno Bee
