According to the Boston Globe, Gardner had the best of the fight, which was a prearranged draw (equivalent to no decision). The fight was poor and the club tried to have the fight ruled "no contest."

According to the Boston Globe, Byers fought George Gardner, not George Gunther, despite the Police Gazette's statement saying that he fought Gunther. It is very unlikely that they would have gotten Gardner's name wrong because he was obviously very well known in the Boston area. Also, the Police Gazette Sporting Annual in various editions has Byers fighting Gardner. NY Evening World reported "George Gardner, of Lowell".
