This was a very poor fight. The police intervened due to mutual fouling. The Pittsburgh Press credits Cotton with a newspaper win, stating that he floored Klondike several times and was having the better of the contest.

Klondike refused to continue after round 14
The fight previously listed here as occurring on May 26, 1902, with Jack Johnson in Memphis, supposedly won by Johnson on 13-round knockout, is undoubtedly a duplication of this fight. No report of a second Memphis fight has ever come to the surface. Also, the second fight did not appear in either the Police Gazette or Andrews record books and made its appearance as an incorrect dating in the 1941 Ring All-Time Record Book, the correctly dated fight being omitted. This produced the confusion and sometimes fights on both dates are listed.

Klondike was down five times in the 5th round. As he was rising the 5th time, he grabbed Maher's legs and threw him down, jumped on his abdomen with his knees and started hitting him on the head. As Maher was warding off the blows, Klondike tried to bite him before the referee was able to pull him off. (Trenton Daily True American)

In a rough bout, Goddard threw "Klondike" onto the floor and then hit him while he was still down. Los Angeles Times Fight reported to have ended in round four in the Chicago Tribune. Klondike did not fight Goddard in New York City on July 3, 1899, as previously listed. This appears to be a duplication of their actual fight of June 21 in Chicago.
