Ten minutes before the bout was set to start, Bert Forbes, Griffin's manager (and a boxer himself), registered a protest with the boxing commission over the rubber tooth guard Snell had in his mouth. (Snell reportedly always wore one whenever it was not explicitly prohibited - perhaps ever since Frankie Green broke off one of his front teeth during their Dec. 28, 1922 fight.) The commission ordered Snell to remove it. But his manager, Joe Waterman, refused and took Snell from the ring. Waterman cooled off a bit. Also, he did not want to disappoint the many fans who had paid good money for this main event. So he brought Snell back, minus the object at issue. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
