Most sources were of the opinion that Sullivan deserved the decision: Baltimore American, Baltimore Sun, Boston Journal, New York Evening World, Trenton Times, wire ("Referee O'Hara called it a draw, but few in the large audience agreed with him.").
Trenton Times reported it was a pre-arranged draw if lasting the distance.
