DeFoe begged for Tippero to quit. As he had instructed his seconds throughout his career, Tippero refused to allow them to throw in the towel. He collapsed in his dressing room and was hospitalized. He died Sept. 11 from paralysis caused by Bright's Disease and a brain concussion sustained during this bout. His record was reported as 88 bouts.
