This was a comeback fight for Popp after some time off. He was saved by the bell in third round after being dropped by a body shot. Popp collapsed on his chair in the corner after the fifth round, "becoming violently ill, and his seconds threw the sponge into the ring as a token of defeat." - Grand Rapids Press.

The fight had been set for 138 pounds, but Popp agreed to go on despite Duggan's weight advantage. Popp went down after a "mix-up" and was counted out, prompting many in the crowd to yell "foul" and "fake." Popp said afterward that "I came here a sick man, but I thought I could win. I did not lay down but did the best I could."

The Globe & Mail referred to the fight as an "alleged match." The bout was originally scheduled for 10 rounds, but Callahan was out of shape, and it was changed to 8 rounds of 2 minutes each. Popp didn't try and do any damage, and the crowd booed loudly at the close.
