In the first half of 1931 Wallace fought regularly on unofficial upstate New York boxing programs. Hisopponents on these cards sometimes also had previous professional experience elsewhere, Bobby Leitham for instance. These these bouts were unofficial affairs (not approved by the New York State Boxing Commission)and therefore were sometimes omitted from the records of Wallace and other boxers.

"Bobby Leitham..ia going great guns, (He defeated Frankie Wallace and then beat Mickey Slavin.) From The Ring, May 1931, page 62. Leitham fought Wallace while using the name of George LaRocco. (It was an issue fought out in U.S. sports as to whether or not an athlete could jump back and forth between the professional and amateur ranks. The prevalent point of view, usually held to the present day, was that athletes lost their amateur status permanently after performing professionally even one time. This distinction still prevails, but has been overlooked in certain cases. For instance, the Olympic boxer Eddid Flynn (of New Orleans) moved back and forth rather freely between the two ranks.
