Pancho Villa had an ulcerated tooth extracted earlier on the day of the fight, July 4, 1925. A few days later, on July 14, he died from Ludwig's angina resulting from an infection that spread to his throat. The Flyweight World Title became vacant with the death of its reigning champion--Pancho Villa. The next day William Muldoon of the NYSAC proclaimed Frankie Genaro Pancho's "legitimate successor." But it was Fidel LaBarba who would become the next Undisputed Flyweight Champion of the World.

On September 16, 1924, the NYSAC suspended Villa for eight months because of his alleged refusal to defend his Flyweight Title against Frankie Genaro September 23. Villa said he had injured a shoulder while training; yet he remained suspended by the NYSAC. So, thus suspended, Villa headed home to the Philippines. The Villa-Carlin fight is reported in the New Orleans Times-Picayune (Jack Kincaid).

"When the fourth round came up, Villa winked at his manager, Frank A. Churchhill, darted across the ring, leaped at the Toronto kid and left-hooked him to the floor for "eight". Mack got up and tried to fight his way way into a clinch, but the little Filipino roused to his job, shook him off, and after these exchanges, slammed over a series of lightning-like lefts and right and Mack counted the daises...It was half a minute before the Toronto lad recovered his scattered senses." - Toronto Star
