Re: For some Joe Louis couldn't even win by winning.
Who was the first boxer to have surgery for a detached retina ? Sam Langford had a bad eye too. Both Harry Greb and Tiger Flowers both died on the operating table under anastesia in 1926 and 1927 while scar tissue from around their eyes was being removed. maybe going under anatesasia had improved by...

( so he must have been already really tired climbing into the ring the next evening ) and here is what Jack Dempsey ...

Re: Jack Sharkey filmed fights (1924-1936)
I remember back in the day here,we sometimes did "in-depth" chronological threads on some fighters. Not only filmed fights but by "fight by fight" i.e links to (free) archive newspaper accounts and interviews, but I seem to remember we did at least two one on Joe Bugner's career and the other on Cle...

Re: For some Joe Louis couldn't even win by winning.
For the most part he seems to have been seen as something special even before he won the title. I don't think these are really representative. Baer mentions him here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iE16gUUaj2I Max Baer mentions seeing "Black-spots". Isn't that one of the signs for having a detached...
