Beginning of D. Dougherty's reign as bantamweight champion
Beginning of D. Dougherty's reign as bantamweight champion
The comment on Harry Harris vs. Pedlar Palmer reads "Danny Dougherty would claim the vacant title on May 26, 1902" while the comment on Terry McGovern vs. Pedlar Palmer reads "Danny Dougherty would win the vacant title on May 26, 1900." As the comment on Dougherty's fight on May 26, 1900 states, "Doughtery claimed World 110lbs title" (and once read "World Bantamweight Title") and as he had no fight on May 26, 1902, 1900 seems to be the year Dougherty claimed the bantamweight title. If 1900 is correct, the comment on the Harris vs. Palmer fight should be corrected.

Re: Beginning of D. Dougherty's reign as bantamweight champion
In the publication I have, there's no record of Dougherty ever being world bantamweight champ @ any weight, which in those days could be anywhere between 102 - 122 pounds. Therefore, anyone could claim to be bantam 102, 105, 110 etc champ.
According to the publication, Tommy Kelly (US) is regarded as the 1st title holder beating Chappie Moran (UK) on points over 10 on 31st January 1890 in New York.
He lost the title to Billy Plimmer (UK) on points over 10 on 22nd August 1892 in Coney Island (US)
However, who's to say that's correct? Boxing ain't exactly short of historians & publications & they tend to differ.
Maybe we should post all this in 'Boxers of the Past' forum & start an all out brawl
