Chris Byrd RTD Vitaly Klitchko? Explain please.

Post by sultan »

Why is Byrd's TKO victory over Klitchko now listed as RTD? Does RTD stand for "retired"? Then why is Ali's victory in the first fight against Sonny Liston not listed as RTD? Why is Pernell Whitaker loss to Bojorquez not listed as RTD?
I find the whole idea of RTD "retarded".
Byrd TKOed Vitaly, no need to invent "RTD" to hide the fact.

I agree. In the summation underneath the fight, where it normally shows the judges' scores, etc., there could be something stating that "so-and-so retired in the corner at the end of the 7th round", but the official standing should still be TKO.

Technically the two are different.. I would just like it to be consistent, however that will never happen.

The reason why that aren't consistent is that people actually have to edit them to reflect that the result was "RTD". You could probably spend all day finding these if you liked.

RTD was recently started because there is too much inconsistency, confusion and disagreement between
different USA boxing commissions on way the rounds and stoppage times of corner retirements are listed.

Byrd's TKO victory over Klitchko is listed as RTD because RTD means it was stopped in the rest period
between rounds. (Usually because of an injury.)

Pernell Whitaker loss to Bojorquez is not listed as RTD because Whitaker couldn’t continue at 27 seconds
into the fourth round (because of the injury) and referee Joe Cortez stopped the bout on the advice of
ring physician Margaret Goodman; therefore the correct result was entered as a TKO because it was not
a corner retirement between rounds.
