This one is a bit of an enigma given the fact he is not an all time great but to look at his five best performences you would think that he was.

Donald Curry
1. KO 2 Milt McCrory
2. KO 1 Roger Stafford
3. W ud Marlon Starling 2
4. KO 4 Colin Jones
5. KO 2 James "Hard Rock" Green

I'd say Curry is pretty close to being an all time great... I'm rather puzzled over why the Green fight is in there as it was rather a non-event... I would have put in Currys losing efforts to either Mccallum or Nunn...

Quarry was a pretty hard puncher, and much more skilled than the limited Shavers. This fight from the "golden age" of the HW division never really got started. Shavers got HUGE press here locally (I live in Akron and Shavers was from Warren) after KOing Jimmy Ellis with a single punch in the 1st round of their fight and was "rewarded" with a fight against the dangerous Quarry. Quarry was a very underrated counterpuncher, and Shavers was pretty wide open anytime he threw that long right hand bomb.

No Moore? No Buchanan?
The Moore and Buchanan fights were great performances as well but I just think these ones pip them... vs Barkley Duran gave an amazing performance at 37 against a far younger and more powerful opponent... the Leonard and Dejesus performances were masterful showings of Duran at his physical peak... against Lampkin Duran looked frighteningly awesome.... against Hagler Duran stood up to a fighter many thought would destroy him... showed again what a great boxer he was, not just fighter.... other candidates for Durans top 5 would be vs Dejesus 2, Palomino, Viruet 2... spoilt for choice really with Roberto... :box: :box: :box:

I had Green because of the early knockout, sometimes it has to do with not only the caliber of opposition but with the way the opposition is beaten. Plus I thought Green was a very underrated fighter, he put a prime Muguibi through a war before going down to defeat. Also I think you have to look at his caliber of opposition rather than his record alone. He opted to take a tough road rather than stick with easy opponents. Don't get me wrong I am not saying he's great, just a bit underrated.

I'll do my favourite Lewis because I never missed any of his fights:

1. Ruddock (The only fight I thought Lewis had a chance of losing)
2. Tyson
3. Golota
4. Grant
5. Tua

Also Rahman II and the way he dispatched Derek "Sweet D" Williams was very funny!

Here is another one where if you base his career on these five wins alone the guy looks like an all time great, you might even say that it resembles a Marvin Hagler type record.

Iran Barkley

2. Wsd Thoms Hearns
3.KO 2 Darrin "Schoolboy" Van Horn
4.Ko 5 Michael "The Silk" Olajide
5.KO 8 Wilford Scypion

Brockton, what are your thoughts on Marciano - Walcott 2 ?

my thoughts?

that was NOT the same walcott of the 1st fight. he walked into that ring scared to death and he fought like he was scared to death. in the ring, walcott was slower, much less agresive, basically he looked like shit. father time finally caught up to joe in the 2nd fight. he was ruined in the 1st marciano fight. felix boccichio said he looked at walcott as he entered the ring and walcott "looked scared and not ready."

- the way walcott fought in the 2nd marciano fight resembled spinx-tyson. walcott was scared to death of rockys right hand

bottom line: marciano hit him with a very hard right hand that floored walcott. why didnt walcott get up? he blacked out as the count went from 7-10 and because of this, he mis read the count and got up too late. it didnt matter, even if the fight continued marciano would have starched him out very soon. marciano defintley knocked him out with a legite punch though. there was no foul play involved.

what happened to the guns blazing, confident, aggresive jersey joe walcott of the 1st marciano fight?

Thats pretty much my take on the fight also . It was here in Chicago , before my time, but it caused a good deal of controversy I believe.

For me durans win over Barkley eclipses his win over Leonard because Duran was 38 against Barkley... fighting a much bigger younger man... the infighting skills that Duran showed against Iran was awesome... in the same way I'd put Ali's win over Foreman above his win over Liston... he was a better fighter against Liston but the acheivement was greater against Foreman....
