Oh god. This one of the fights in which Eubank escaped with his title without doing any work during the actual fight? Where he just wandered around
Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 46 - Chris Eubank vs Ray Close I
The best thing about the two Close fights was the leprechaun who spangled Eubank with glitter.

Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 46 - Chris Eubank vs Ray Close I
I've just watched this fight but never scored because I thought we were watching the rematch for the challenge
It was a close fight,I'd probably say Eubank done enough but he can't argue with the draw because as mentioned,he has his fair share of lazy spells whilst Close got to work with less quality but more effort, the KD Eubank scored made the difference in the end, lovely knockdown BTW ,a right uppercut that Jr would've been proud of
MC made an arse of it announcing Eubank as the winner and Chris still thought he'd won when being interview ringside

I watched the rematch tonight, another close fight which like the 1st fight could've went either way,Eubank a bit busier this time around, also hurt Close late on again

Eubank's KO of Jarvis was quality, I've seen that a few times on his highlight reels

Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 46 - Chris Eubank vs Ray Close I
Close's fight with Nicotra was well balanced until Ray got tagged by the same uppercut that Eubank decked him with in their 1st fight and rocked him with in the rematch,Nicotra showed great finishing instincts but Close was gone either way
Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 46 - Chris Eubank vs Ray Close I
The last 3 have been one-sided, hoping for a closer fight, It was a draw, so I should OK
Eubank vs Close
1. 9 - 10 Close. Close threw plenty and landed little, Eubank threw little and was a tad more efficient. Give it to Close on effort over Eubanks elusiveness
2. 9 - 10 Close. Close round again, and a close round again. Eubank could be winning these as ever, couple decent punches got through for Close
3. 10 - 9 Eubank, landed a couple more telling shots. Close still working well though and close to taking a share of it
4. 10 - 10. Close landing with jabs, might have given him the round if he landed anything else. Eubank with the odd success but not enough to nick it either
5. 10 - 9 Eubank, felt he landed a few good shots in the first half. Watt giving Close credit for work but I thought Eubank made him miss narrowly too often
6. 9 - 10 Close. Close busy again and landed a couple decent combinations. Eubank threw a bit more but a tad inaccurate himself when he did
7. 10-10. Eubank took the first half but wild swings being punished in the second half, so often Eubank is his own worst enemy
8. 10 - 9 Eubank, landed a few shots and again just making Close miss enough to nick this round
9. 10 - 9 Eubank. Close quieter in this round and letting Eubank have his own way
10. 10 - 9 Eubank fighting well in spurts, Close letting him take a breather when he needs to. Close landed a good right hand and Chris retaliated with a solid 3 punch combo, you know he has it in the locker when he needs it
11. 10 - 8 Eubank. Good knockdown and almost had him over a couple more times. Close came back well, but a clear 10-8 for me, Close needs a KO now
12. 10 - 9 Eubank. Brave effort from Close in the last round but Eubank fought well and landed heavy shots
117-112 Eubank. Could have had it a little closer but can't see how you could have gibven this fight 113-116 to close.
Eubank? We'll we all know what he was. Frustrating and brilliant in equal measure, at times his own worst enemy. The flash stuff could be amazing but at times it seemed utterly pointless and counter-productive. He could have worked harder and the biggest question mark was his engine. He made the 12 round distance a good few times but despite the low output, often looked utterly spent by the final round. But you always felt there was more in the tank
Close was hard-working and deserved credit for the effort he put in. Not quite good enough in the end and I don't even think a harder punch would have won him it, as Eubanks chin was legendary.
Often feel conflicted scoring some of these rounds, part of me wants to penalise Eubank for not giving more but a little bit leans towards gifting him quiet rounds because you just know he was the class above his opponent and he had it in the locker if he chose to use it.
I'd be interested to see a couple other cards to see if anyone ends up with it as wide as me, I perhaps didn't give Close the credit his effort maybe deserved

Eubank - Jarvis
1. 10 - 9
2. 10 - 9
3. - - - KO
20-18 Eubank
Pretty devastating stoppage win for Eubank.
----------------------------
Close - Nicotra
1. 9 - 10
2. 9 - 10
3. 10 - 9
4. 10 - 9
5. 10 - 9
6. 8 - 10
7. 10 - 9
8. - - - TKO
66-66 Even
Close fight before the stoppage. Nicotra pulling a Maussa in the last round was not very nice.
This fight was less than a year before the Eubank fight, so it was interesting to compare Eubank's & Nicotra's performances against him.

Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 46 - Chris Eubank vs Ray Close I
A good few feel Eubank should've had at the very least one defeat prior to Collins, the Close fights being controversial.
It's my opinion that if Eubank had lost one of these kind of fights, he may have bucked up. Got a reality check, listened to people and adopted a more rigorous, assertive and correct style of boxing.
He often fought like he was staring into his own reflection, mesmerised by himself, lost in his own crazy little world.
