in 1995 they were calling him 30 yet in 1983 he was the pan americna champ? a pretty lofty accomplishment for an 18 yr old dontchu think.

i reckon he was 35 in 1995, he sure looked it, although steve holdsworth reckons he was 36.

doesnt matter being mid to late 30s these days, training seems more advanced and breeds longer lasting fighters it seems. jorges problem was his refusal to learn and train, thus develop into an excellent heavy.

It IS an accomplishment. But considering the Cuban program and the fact that he was amongst its top heavies in the 80s, it is hardly inconcieveable that he could have won it at 18.

The REAL shame is that:

1) He didn't get to fulfill his destiny due to the boycotts. He would have won at least one, maybe two olympic championships. His ledger would look a lot better with a couple of golds or one gold and a silver or bronze. Hell, with two golds he would have been treated better by the Cuban government. He might not have defected and he could have been shooting for his third Pan-Am and Olympic titles at the same time he was starting his pro career.

2) He did turn pro with the class of 84 due to Cuban communism. He was an amatuer too long and this is another reason he didn't make it as a pro.

I am AGREEING that it would be a lofty accomplishment for an 18 year old BUT I am also saying that it is not inconcieveable to me that he could have won the Pan-Am Gold at that age. He was the one of the best (if not THE best) Cuban heavyweights of the 80s.

Cuban has the top amatuer boxing program in the world. Several Cubans have won many prestigious international tournaments at young ages. Why is it so incredible that he did too?

Three-time 175 titleholder Marvin Johnson would talk in his interviews about people calling him "old man" when he was still in his late teens.

Jorge Luis Gonzalez, was a good cuban amateur boxer, but never the best.

Born in Havana (1964), he never beat to cubans numbers 2nd and 3rd, Angel Milián and Felix Lemus.

But he won gold medals when he was remplaced Teofilo Stevenson at international competitions in Caracas (1983), Santiago de los Caballeros(1986) and Indianapolis (1987), where he make his best performance beating amateurs Riddick Bowe and Lennox Lewis.

In April 1991, at 27, when Gonzalez defects cuban boxing team at Helsinki, his career had in declive because his displacement for news cuban boxers as Leonardo Martinez Fizz and Roberto Balado.

interesting stuff..... i have jorges early pro fights from 1991 and just looking at the man i'm more inclined to believe he reall was 32 and NOT 26 as his team claimed.

(how could comissions expect him to present a birth certificate when he had defected from cuba?)
