The two fighters sent each other to the hospital. Ali went briefly for a swollen right jaw, which made him appear to need a tooth extraction, and a lumpy-faced Frazier was in and out for two weeks for treatment of exhaustion, high blood pressure and kidney problems. The two men also left each other irreversibly diminished. They would never be the same fighters again.

I think the record clearly states he was in and out of the hospital for two weeks. At this point only God and Joe know what transpired, beyond what was reported in the press...

Joe Frazier had to see an 'eye specialist', as there was concern about the 'scrape' from Arthur Mercante's
finger-nail.
The Muhammad Ali Camp put out that 'press garbage' that Joe was in the Hospital on the verge of death....
Yancey Durham was worried that the eye had suffered permanent damage from the accidental scraping, and
he wanted to make sure Joe was O.K.
There was no internet, no cable, no twenty four hour sports programming in 1971. I don't see the mechanism ny which such a rumor could be contemporaneously sustained.

Who is Big Jim?
Big Jim is the guy who grabbed Ali by the throat and lifted him off the ground and called him a fancy boy because he heard that Ali had made Earnie Terrell dress up as Uncle Tom Bosley for Halloween.
Ths has all been explained by the Duchess in a previous thread.
Eddie Futch - Trainer for Champion - Joe Frazier, said that he wants his fighter to retire.
"Nobody can fight as hard as Joe, and not end up getting hurt. He has nothing left to prove."
Joe Frazier said that his right 'Kidney' has been throbbing, and that he's had a bad headache for
a couple of days that won't go away, even by taking the biggest 'Excedrin' in the St. Luke's
Children Medical Center.
Dr. James Guiffre said that the Champion was suffering from exhaustion, and nausea for 3-Days,
but that it was nothing serious.
Manager - Yancey Durham said that he had been on Joe's case for 4-Months to retire. Even before
the fight with Muhammad Ali.
"I want Joe to retire, he promised me. What else is left. The only thing Joe might do is fight Muhammad
one more time, and then call it quits. I would rather have him quit now."
Futch was wise. Had Frazier retired right after the FOTC, his status as an ATG heavyweight would of been forever sealed---- rather than now, where he is almost considered a footnote in the Ali legend. Frazier was so much better than that.
The idea that that FOTC did not really affect Joe, and he just cruised in to the hospital by happenstance around that time for a check up...and of course to look into the possible damage that the referee imposed on Joe....is of course a thought to consider.
Perhaps this explains why in their next fight, the referee allowed Joe a few extra moments when things looked a little dim for him.

Yeah, Perez really helped Joe out in that one but despite deducting Ali 7 points for extreme holding it was not enough. Ali was just too good that night, winning every round and actually knocking Frazier out in the second round.

Well some Ali fans will recall that this is just the way it was. lol.
Now others will say that Joe beat Ali from stem to stern and somehow lost the decision.

I won't go as far as that. That's what revisionists do...Ali's legacy doesn't rest on embellishment. He did make Frazier take two steps back. That didn't happen in the first fight and never happened again in the second fight. It did happen a lot in the 13th and 14th round of the third fight.
The only way you get out of this trap you're laying for yourself, is if you somehow come up with evidence that clearly shows that not only was Joe not affected by Ali in the fight, but that Joe's Dr was in league with Ali's boys, and created a bogus story, that makes it look as if Joe somehow needed hospitalization after the fight.
Or....Ali was so impressed with Big Jim's work that he hired him to work Frazier over BEFORE the FOTC...and he did all this damage before Ali laid a finger on him and he STILL was able to beat Ali in the fight.
yeah...I bet that's the real story. (If not feel free to use it...I think it has legs!)

Precisely, claiming that Perez rescued Frazier from being knocked out is on par with the "cut the gloves off" bs after the 14th in Manila.
Hey hhaehre......That's the gist of my point.....we just don't know what would have or wouldn't have happened. Odds are you are right.....but it is simply unknown. We do know that Ali won that particular go round.'

My favorite round of the second fight was the ninth round. It was vintage Ali.
Il Duce.....put in a brighter bulb.....I was referring to the second fight. Not sure what you were extrapolating.....but also close the curtains...shouldn't do that where people can view.

OK...now it's time to go into the cupboard, to the top shelf just left of the salt. This time grab the hun'derd watter and put it in the lamp. Then read this again.....I believe ThatONe and I took a left turn and picked up a short conversation about the 2nd fight. Now in this second fight there was of course NO 15th round to "smell".
Maybe you're smellin' the ol glue bottle that spilled......again?
Yes we wandered a bit off topic.....sorry...but we seemed to have left you in the cornfield. And for that, I apologize to you.

Don't call me 'Bro' Whitey.......
I actually enjoy watching Rounds 5, 11 and 15.......Smells like VICTORY !!!!
The second fight was a twelve rounder, bro...Do keep up, please.
