14 December (102lbs) Harry McDermott w co 4 (20) Charlie Taylor, Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle, England. Referee: Sam Francis. Made at 102lbs, McDermott soon got down to business and although Taylor mixed it up with him he was found wanting in the second round when knocked down three times. Fighting back well in the third and presenting McDermott with a few problems of his own, Taylor came out for the fourth with some resolve before being chased all over the ring. Several times McDermott had the left on Taylor’s jaw without dislodging him, but there was no let-up and when a right to the jaw landed with some venom the latter finally went down to be counted out. While there being no billing as such, on winning McDermott claimed the English 102lbs title and challenged the world, putting down a deposit to bind a match with either Bob Bailey or Harry Ashley.
