14 January (115lbs) George Monroe w pts 25 Casper Leon, Whittington Park Arena, Hot Springs, Arkansas, USA. Referee: Bat Masterson. Having claimed the American 115lbs title following the draw with Johnny Reagan, Monroe met Leon at that weight in what was a serious risk to his championship aspirations. Although not quite as clever as his experienced opponent, Monroe maintained his aggression throughout as the pair battled for supremacy despite being badly cut over the left eye early on. There were no knockdowns as the men went blow for blow, but there were several occasions when one or the other was badly staggered. At the final bell it was Monroe who received the referee’s verdict, while Leon felt that he had done enough to give him at least a share of the decision. There appear to be no more contests at 115lbs for Monroe, who was fighting at a higher weight from thereon.
Years later, on 24 February 1937, it was reported in the San Mateo Daily Times that Tommy Feltz had first claimed the American 115lbs title after knocking out George Halliday inside 90 seconds at the Nutmeg AC, Hartford, Connecticut on 7 February 1901, the finishing blow, a short right to the jaw, completing the onslaught.
