16 October (116lbs) Frankie Neil drew 20 Johnny Reagan, Hazzard’s Pavilion, Los Angeles, California, USA. Referee: Charles Eyton. Although there was nothing reported in the Los Angeles Times to say that this was a championship fight, the San Francisco Chronicle clearly stated that it was, without giving the weights of the fighters. According to the paper both men were inside 115lbs the day before the contest, although Reagan was quoted as saying that he expected to weigh 118lbs once the fight was underway, creating some doubt whether the match was made at 116lbs, the weight Neil won the title at. The fight itself saw Reagan making the pace early on and decking Neil with a terrific smash to the jaw before dropping down himself to take a breather. After the 14th Neil was desperate for the kayo, but was unable to find it as Reagan kept his distance when showing great footwork. There were some who thought that Reagan had a reasonable claim to the 116lbs title on the result, but no claim was forthcoming as the latter, who was now more comfortable at a higher poundage, won himself a crack at Abe Attell for the featherweight crown.
