17 October (108lbs) Digger Stanley w co 19 (20) Harry McDermott, Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle, England. Billed for the world and English 108lbs titles, almost from the opening bell Stanley (108) was popping his left hand into his rival’s face and coupled with solid right swings to head and body McDermott (107) began to look a sorry sight, his left eye closing fast by the eighth. It was quite clear that McDermott’s best chance of winning would come if he could mount a sustained attack on the body and he began to have some success with that tactic at the halfway stage. However, Stanley was too smart to stay in one place for too long and it was only when he tired between the 14th and 17th that McDermott did his best work. Having regained his strength in the 18th, Stanley again began to open McDermott up and in the next session he sent the latter down to be counted out on the 2.15 mark following straight left-rights to the jaw. This was to be Stanley’s last fight at the weight and a month later he had challenged the world at 114lbs.
