1887-03-11 (124lbs) Ike Weir w co 36 (finish) Jack Williams, Westerly, Rhode Island, USA. Referee: Captain A. W. Schook. Billed for the world 124lbs title, Weir (118¾) was reported as having eliminated all his main rivals. After five active rounds it developed into a tame affair due to Weir damaging both hands early on. However, in the 36th session Williams (123) was floored by a tremendous blow to the nose, and on getting up he was immediately dropped again, this time for the full count. At the finish Williams was adamant that he had been fouled, accusing the referee of being in Weir’s pocket. In that, he was supported by several bystanders. From all reports read, it is unclear whether the men used two ounce or skin-tight gloves, although it was almost certainly the latter.
