1887-03-28 (136lbs) Jimmy Mitchell drew 16 (finish) Paddy Smith, Medical Lane, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Held in a private home. Billed for the American 136lbs title, with the Police Gazette Championship Belt as a prize, the fight was halted after Smith’s seconds followed by members of the audience broke into the ring when he had been knocked down and pummelled unmercifully while on the floor. Soured by fouls, Smith had the better of the first eight rounds before Mitchell took over in the tenth. Following the debacle the referee called for a draw. The battle was contested in skin-tight gloves.
