1888-02-25 (108lbs) Hughie Boyle w rtd 9 (finish) Jack Dinan, Staten Island, NYC, New York, USA. Contested somewhere on the island under MoQ Rules, using kid gloves, Boyle (105) claimed the 108lbs title following his win over Dinan (108), who retired at the end of the ninth round after being knocked down and suffering a badly broken nose.

Earlier, on 24 December 1887, at Oliver’s Cottage, Manhattan, NYC, Boyle supposedly knocked out Tommy Spider Kelly inside eight rounds at 105lbs ringside to claim the title at that weight. That was what The Ring Record Book showed, but following extensive research of the New York papers of the day I have yet to find a report of the fight, let alone the fact that it might have involved a claim at that weight in skin-tight gloves.
