1889-10-14 (112lbs) Tom Gardner w pts 12 Charlie Mansford, Astley’s Amphitheatre, Lambeth, London, England. Made at 112lbs, for the first few rounds Mansford had the better of it mainly due to his infighting tactics, but once Gardner warmed up from the halfway period onwards it was he who was dictating matters. In the 11th round Mansford was nearly finished off as Gardner went all out to batter him to the boards, but the latter held out despite being outmuscled.

Although there was no title billing Gardner staked a claim to the English championship following his victory, but by November 1891 he had moved on.

On 7 November, at Astley’s Amphitheatre, Tim Buckley outpointed Jack Hullett over three rounds to win a championship competition at the weight.
