1889-12-17 (130lbs) Austin Gibbons w co 24 (finish) Mike Cushing, Stamford, Connecticut, USA. Referee: Dominic McCaffrey. Held in a local hall, Gibbons pounded Cushing all over from start to finish, the latter resorting to fouling. In the 24th round Cushing was knocked down twice before being finished off by a right to the stomach. Billed for the American and world 130lbs title, and contested in skin-tight gloves, despite having been articled for 126lbs Gibbons (130) claimed the championship following his victory over Cushing (128).
On 10 October 1892, Gibbons v Stanton Abbott, which had been billed for the world 130lbs title at the NSC in London, was cancelled when the former was unable to make the weight.
