1891-02-20 (154lbs) Young Mitchell w co 12 (finish) George LaBlanche, California AC, San Francisco, California, USA. With LaBlanche (153) claiming the title and the Chicago Tribune reporting it to be a championship fight, following his defeat at the hands of Mitchell (151) the Canadian lost any vestige of credibility he might have had despite continuing with his claim, while the victor established no recognition whatsoever. The fight itself saw both men down at the same time in the first round, and both down separately in the seventh before LaBlanche was dropped in the ninth, tenth and 12th. The final knockdown, following a light left, brought about a knockout win for Mitchell, which most of the boxing press described as a likely fake and a disgrace to the sport.
