1890-02-27 (107lbs) Alf Gower w co 14 (finish) Fred Sullivan, Ormonde Club, Walworth, London, England. Billed for the English 107lbs title, it was the first ever championship match at an odd weight in a British ring. It was clear from the start that Gower (106½) had a height-and-reach advantage, and although he was more marked than Sullivan (107) by the end of the ninth in what had been even contest he was beginning to look the best bet. Having finished the ninth groggily Sullivan was in a similar condition at the end of the tenth, and all the money appeared to be on Gower. Down in the 11th from solid right hands and saved by the bell, Sullivan was under terrific pressure before being dropped again at the end of the 13th. He was eventually counted out at 1.54 of the 14th after a right to the jaw had knocked him across the bottom rope.
