1891-03-12 (126lbs) Young Griffo w disq 20 (finish) George Powell, Gymnastic Club, Sydney, Australia. Referee: Sid Bloomfield. Billed for the Australian version of the world 126lbs title, the Newcastle Morning Herald reported that Griffo (120) and Powell (119½) contested nearly 20 good rounds before the latter dropped to the floor after being stunned and was promptly disqualified on the grounds that he went down to avoid punishment. At the outset, and bearing in mind that the police could well interfere, the referee stated that he would stop the fight when he was satisfied as to who was the best man. The paper reported that the contest was in every way a test of skill if ever there was one, and with no brute force or strength entered into both men fought in a fair and straightforward manner that was a treat for all to see. There was no mention of any knockdowns. Interestingly, the weight recorded for Griffo, which seemed strangely low for him at this time, could well have been wrongly reported.
