1891-05-28 (156lbs) John O’Brien w co 7 (finish) Alf Ball, Pelican Club, London, England. Referee: George Vize. Made at catchweights, the turning point in the fight came in the fifth round after Ball (167¾) had ended the session in a dazed condition. At this point O’Brien (156) had begun to get on top, dropping Ball heavily in the sixth. Although Ball got up he was then battered from pillar to post as O’Brien looked for the finisher, and with the seventh underway it was clearly seen that the latter was merely biding his time. Eventually, a right hand to the jaw put Ball down. Despite Ball making it to his feet, following several heavy blows from the same hand O’Brien dropped his rival for the full count.
The Welshman not only extended his 160lbs English title claim on beating Ball, who retired after the bout, but also took over the loser’s 156lbs claim.
