1894-03-19 (128lbs) Bill Corbett drew 12 Jack Fitzgibbon, Greyhound Hotel, Newmarket, England. Referee: William Reilly. Although a private show with no championship billing as such, both men were looking to claim the English 128lbs title. Fitzgibbon made the better start before Corbett came on strong in the latter rounds, especially in the last when he went all out for the win. The Sporting Life reported it as being a slashing set-to from start to finish.
On 21 April, Tom Causer won a 128lbs championship competition when outpointing Jack Loader over four rounds at St Andrew’s Hall, Westminster, London. Corbett and Fitzgibbon met again on 10 September over six rounds at the Goodwin Club, Shoreditch, London, the latter gaining a points decision. Strangely, years later this fight was accorded championship status at 128lbs despite it having no place as a title fight.
