With both men inside 118lbs, Smith, who was on the verge of victory after knocking Gardner down in the fifth, was so anxious to finish it that he struck the latter when he was in the act of rising and was disqualified. Despite the fact that it was not a conclusive win, Gardner was still claiming the title at the weight following his victory.
