1895-01-21 (142lbs) Dick Burge w co 4 (20) Tom Williams, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Made at 142lbs, after a dull opening round Burge (138lbs) picked up the pace in the second before having Williams (139½) over in the third. Starting the fourth where he left off, Burge was quickly on the attack and after fair pressure he floored Williams with a right to the jaw, the latter being counted out after hitting his head on the floor with great force. Burge successfully defended his English version of the world title against Williams, and in doing so he also took over the latter’s Imperial British Empire title.
When Burge was presented with a solid gold belt, prescribed to the ten-stone champion of the world, it was reported in the Sporting Life that he would be foolish to ever box below 140lbs again as he had outgrown the weight class.
