1896-01-17 (115lbs) Sammy Kelly w rsc 24 (25) Jack Ward, Eureka AC, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Referee: Sam Austin. Made at 115lbs, prior to the 15th round the contest had been relatively even, both men having their successes. At that point it was Ward who suddenly weakened, a straight right to the jaw sending him down in his own corner, nearly ending the contest. However, according to the Baltimore Sun Ward recuperated wonderfully well, actually looking to be the stronger man by the 20th. That said, in the next round Ward was saved by the bell after being dropped by blows to head and body. Ward’s days were now numbered, and in the 24th a big right hand from Kelly knocked him out of the ring, whereupon the marshal in charge ordered the referee to stop the fight.

Immediately afterwards, Kelly claimed the American title at the weight.
