1897-04-23 Bob Armstrong w rtd 1 (10) Sam Pruitt, National AC, Woodward’s Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Hiram Cook. Right from the opening bell Pruitt looked a beaten man, his whole demeanour giving the general impression that he would rather be somewhere else than be facing up to the ‘black’ title claimant. Taking the initiative Armstrong was soon banging in lefts to head and body, and having received a hefty blow to the stomach Pruitt walked to his corner after telling the referee that he was through for the night. The fight had lasted a matter of seconds.
On 13 September, in defence of his ‘black’ title claim, Armstrong forced Jack Douglass to retire in the second of an eight-round contest at the Second Regiment Armory, Chicago.
