1897-05-31 (133lbs) Johnny Hughes w co 10 (15) Jim Curran, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Made at 133lbs, Hughes, a booth fighter who was making his debut in a genuine contest, started reasonably well before running into trouble in the fifth and sixth rounds when Curran had him groggy on a number of occasions. However, in the seventh Hughes made a remarkable recovery to have Curran badly hurt after landing with heavy rights to the jaw, and although the latter fought back well he was in dire trouble at the end of the ninth. Unfortunately for Curran he had not recovered sufficiently in the tenth, and Hughes, wasting no time, soon had him down and out from another right to the point.
Hughes was eventually credited as being the English champion following the result, but by March 1898 he was calling himself the English 136 to 138lbs champion having moved up in weight.
