1897-09-27 (123/124lbs) Bill Brierley w pts 20 Jim Barry, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. With both men inside 123lbs, Brierley (121) added to his English 124lbs title claim after his win over Barry (121). Right from the start Brierley was a revelation, picking up round after round and cutting Barry over both eyes in the process. Despite Brierley proving he had a punch he failed to knock Barry down, it being clear that the latter had been playing a waiting game while hoping that his rival would blow up at some stage. When that did not happen it was all over for Barry, the points award going to Brierley by a big margin.
