1897-10-18 (118lbs) Pedlar Palmer w pts 20 Dave Sullivan, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Articled at 116lbs, give or take two pounds, prior to the contest Palmer had been informed by the NSC that unless he and his opponents weighed in below 116lbs in future they would insist on matching him against Ben Jordan, who they recognised as champion between 118 and 120lbs.
Although there were no knockdowns it was still a close and entertaining fight, with Palmer (115½) showing all of his old trickery while Sullivan (118) looked to settle the fight with one punch. Several times Sullivan swung his right for the jaw only to find Palmer missing, his better work coming when going to the body. At the final bell it was Palmer, who more often than not found the mark with lightning left jabs, whose arm was raised.
