1897-11-18 Tom Sharkey w rsc 6 (20) Joe Goddard, Mechanics’ Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Bob McArthur. Having dropped Goddard twice in the opening two rounds Sharkey resorted to rushing his man in the next three sessions with very little happening. In the sixth Sharkey continued to bore in, and after sending Goddard down with a right to the head he proceeded to fall on him with great force. Although Goddard beat the count he was in no condition to continue, the referee stopping the fight. Sharkey stated afterwards that he would be challenging Bob Fitzsimmons again, and if after a reasonable time the champion had failed to accept his offer he would continue to claim the title.
