1898-01-22 (92lbs) Billy Ray w co 8 (12) Curly Wood, Beresford Street Drill Hall, Woolwich, London, England. Referee: Ed Plummer. Although no title billing or weights were given it was thought to involve Wood’s 92lbs English title claim, but despite his victory Ray never defended as such. The fight itself was a disaster for Wood, who was knocked down six times in the first round, twice in the second and once in the fifth before getting himself going in a limited fashion. However, in the seventh Ray was once again punching Wood all over the ring, and although the latter made it to the bell he was twice dropped in the eighth, the second occasion seeing him counted out.
