1898-03-11 Tom Sharkey drew 7 (20) Joe Choynski, Woodward’s Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: George Green. Yet another rough and tumble of a contest instigated by Sharkey saw him rush Choynski time and again, repeatedly fouling him. Choynski was easily the better boxer of the two, sending in stiff left jabs, but after being dropped more by a push than a punch in the fifth on getting up he was forced over the ropes before help arrived in the shape of the attending police. Hurt in the sixth, when Sharkey continued his rushing tactics in the seventh after dropping Choynski with a dubious punch he then pushed him through the ropes. At that point, the referee, calling the fight off on the instructions of the police, announced a drawn decision.
